Immigration Reform Offers an Opportunity to Address Gender Biases in our Immigration System

Social scientists Cecilia Menjivar and Olivia Salcido of the Immigration Policy Center have conducted a 10-year study of the US immigration system and concluded many women confront legal systematic barriers when trying to gain legal status. According to the study, immigration law presumes and reinforces women’s status of dependency, hindering women’s legal incorporation in the host society.

The ongoing immigration debate offers member of Congress an opportunity to eliminate some of the gender inequalities in our immigration system. Let's hope Congress considers these issues as they debate reforms to our immigration laws.  Click here for the study.
