Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Tuesday, May 21st, that would create a 13-year path to citizenship for most of the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants, brightening prospects for the U.S.' first major immigration reform in more than 25 years.

The panel voted 13-5 in favor of the comprehensive bipartisan immigration legislation, which would also ramp up border security and modernize the legal immigration system. Senators have fiercely debated the bill, which still has to pass the full Senate and gain approval from the Republican-controlled U.S. House.
